Nexus Mods, a central hub for PC game modding content, is banning all political U.S based mods until “after the next President of the United States has been inaugurated.”
Nexus Mods, simply known as Nexus, is a modders heaven, full of player-created content for a majority of popular PC games. Its most popular titles for mods include Skyrim, Fallout 4, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the Dragon Age series.
The ban on political mods was announced in a news update, posted by the site’s owner Robin “Dark0ne” Scott. “Recently we have seen a spate of provocative and troll mods being uploaded based around current sociopolitical issues in the United States,” the post reads. “As we get closer to the US election in November we expect this trend to increase as it did this time 4 years ago.”
Citing the quality of said mods and the often “polarising views they express” as well as “the fact that a small but vocal contingent of our users are seemingly not intelligent or grown up enough to be able to debate the issues,” a ban has to be enacted.
If it wasn’t obvious by now, Scott is not mincing words about what he thinks of the folks uploading politically charged content. “Most of these mods are being uploaded by cowards with sock puppet accounts deliberately to try and cause a stir,” said Scott. He suggests that any users browsing through Nexus Mods that find politically charged content report the mod and move on.
Scott also isn’t worried about any negative feedback he may be getting for this zero-tolerance position. “To be blunt, we do not care how this looks nor do we care if you think the mods we do or don’t moderate reflect on us, our political beliefs or what we do and don’t want on our site,” said Scott. “Say and do what you want on other sites or services, we care nothing for it here.”
