Like Xbox Series X, PS5 also has no optical audio out

PS5 is also ditching the classic optical port.

The PlayStation 5 will not have an optical audio out port like PS4 and PS4 Pro. Sony elected not to bring back optical, just like Microsoft decided to with Xbox Series X.

The confirmation didn’t come directly from Sony, because the platform holder has yet to actually show the back of the PS5. Instead, headset manufacturer Astro revealed to the press which of its various headsets are going to work with PS5 and Xbox Series X.

In a briefing attended by Destructoid, Astro confirmed that it will be offering an HDMI-to-optical splitter on PS5. The unit splits the audio signal out of HDMI while allowing 4k passthrough for video. Astro says the adapter does not introduce any lag to the signal, and supports HDMI 2.1 and HDCP.

Every headset is different, and things are generally slightly more complicated on PS5 compared to Xbox Series X, so it’s worth consulting the link to see which of your Astro headsets will work and what new adapter (if any) you might need. Astro’s official site is supposed to have detailed pages with the same information, but the links are dead at the time of writing.

The news isn’t particularly surprising; optical audio has been on its way out for a while. It served a purpose, of course, which was to get audio out away from HDMI, leaving the latter dedicated to video. Some setups relied on having both connected at the same time, while alternating between audio sources in the consoles’ own dashboards.

Nonetheless, it is disappointing that Sony didn’t find this information significant enough to communicate in the months since PS5 has been announced. It is worth stressing that we’re mere months away from release and the back of the PS5 has yet to be shown publicly.

Fall Guys Brand Auction Is Over, Raises $1 Million for SpecialEffect

Winning guys.

Two weeks ago, Fall Guys announced the Battle of the Brands, a fundraising auction that would trade the top donation to UK charity SpecialEffect for custom in-game skins. After a fortnight of brands, companies, and individuals stumbling over each other to claim the winning bid, the event is over, and the last few minutes were rather eventful.

For a while, it looked like the winner would be YouTuber FGTeev with $510,000 -- an already enormous sum of money. However, right at the last minute, an interesting crew announced an incredible bid. G2 Esports, Aim Lab, MrBeast, and Ninja banded together to raise the winning donation to $1 million.

Arcade racers are having a bit of a moment

It's important, I think, to be grateful for what you've got, and as a fan of racing games I can say with some conviction it's rarely been any better than it has right now. The current crisis that saw garages shuttered at racing tracks across the world put the spotlight on sims as drivers looked to get their kicks in the virtual space, and showed us what a fine crop there currently is: there's iRacing, looking as strong as it ever has in its 12 year history, with rFactor 2 finally taking shape as a proper contender too, while console players recently got a chance to sample the delights of Kunos Simulazioni's Assetto Corsa Competizione - and looking beyond that, on console you're spoilt for choice, with F1 going from strength to strength while off-roaders get not just Dirt Rally but also Kylotonn's equally excellent WRC series. What a time to be alive, frankly.

"But!" I hear you ask, "what about the arcade racers?" Well, my friend, have patience and perhaps put a few pennies aside, because they're coming. And they're coming very, very soon.

Next week is set to be one of the most remarkable for the genre since Blur and Split/Second famously clashed at release (and infamously crashed and burned soon after, but I'm hopeful that won't be the case here), with two of the very best arcade racers I've played in the last decade going head-to-head. Hotshot Racing is first up, the hotly-awaited spin on early 90s arcade classics from Lucky Mountain Games releasing on September 10th. A day later and the lesser-known but no less fantastic Inertial Drift from Level 91 and PQube comes out, the game drawing inspiration from late 90s racers and with more than a few twists of its own.

Square Enix Reveals Tokyo Game Show Lineup With Potential Unannounced Games

While Tokyo Game Show will be hosted exclusively online this year, Japanese developers are already gearing up to participate, and among them is Square Enix.

The publisher opened its special site for the event and the lineup includes plenty of games that will be showcased.

Here is a list.

  • Marvel’s Avengers
  • Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory
  • Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition
  • Collection of SaGa
  • Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai games
  • Babylon’s Fall
  • Balan Wonderworld
  • War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
  • Toji to Miko
  • Dragon Quest X
  • Dragon Quest Rivals Ace
  • Final Fantasy XIV
  • Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
  • Romancing SaGa Re:Universe
  • Dragon Quest Walk
  • Dragon Quest Tact
  • Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca’s Mysterious Key
  • Final Fantasy Trading Card Game

Yet, perhaps the most interesting part is in the schedule for the livestreams split over four days.

There are five slots marked as “coming soon” which possibly indicates unannounced games.

Those slots are on September 24 at 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm local time, on September 26 at 12:30 pm local time and 10:00 pm local time, and on September 27 at 4:00 pm local time.

It’s worth mentioning that possibly not all of them are unannounced games, because Babylon’s Fall and Balan Wonderworld appear in the lineup but not yet in the schedule.

It’s quite likely that the broadcasts held later in the afternoon and evening will be for games also targeting the west, while I would be unsurprised if the one in the morning was related to a game targeting only Japan, possibly mobile. Yet, this is just my speculation

You can find the embed of all the livestreams below.

Windbound Review

Washed ashore on a remote island with nothing but a knife and my wits to protect me, I was immediately grabbed by Windbound’s opening moments. In this seafaring adventure you must harvest materials and craft tools to keep main character Kara alive as she navigates through a series of procedurally generated archipelagos in her search for the other surviving members of her tribe. Unfortunately, the combination of exhausting survival mechanics and a paper-thin plot meant that neither the voyage nor the destination proved to be worth the time and effort. Windbound takes an intriguing premise and completely blows it. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/31/the-first-17-minutes-of-windbound-gameplay"] A gorgeous painterly aesthetic gives the impression that Windbound could be set somewhere off the coast of Hyrule, but that’s largely where comparisons with The Legend of Zelda end. While it does feature a lead character with an insatiable appetite for smashing pots, Windbound otherwise lacks the dungeons, environmental puzzles, flexible combat, or boss fights typically found in one of Link’s legendary adventures. Instead, Windbound leans hard into a survival-based grind that makes Breath of the Wild’s breakable weapons seem like little more than a minor inconvenience. Before you begin the adventure you’re instructed that the ‘Survivalist’ difficulty setting is ‘the full Windbound experience’, and so that’s exactly what I chose to play it on. Survivalist strips you of most of your inventory and returns you to the beginning each time Kara perishes, and I found those high roguelike stakes made me particularly careful about which beasts to engage with and which craftable objects to prioritise as I made my way from one island to the next. There’s a fairly extensive crafting system at Kara’s disposal, as almost everything in her surroundings - from grass and sticks to animal bones and hides - can be gathered and converted into rudimentary tools like shovels and hammers or enhancements to her boat in order to make sailing speedier. But aside from a basic boat and perhaps a sharpened stick to defend yourself with, none of it feels particularly essential. You can play all the way through Windbound’s story existing on a pacifist’s diet of mushrooms, avoiding all enemies and not making a single modification to your canoe. There aren’t any creatures of significance that force you to strengthen Kara’s combat capabilities in order to overcome them, nor are there particular stormy seas that require extensive boat upgrades to cross. There’s all this crafting to do in Windbound, but no compelling reason to bother with any of it. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=windbound-screenshots&captions=true"] In fact, the most persistent threat in Windbound isn’t the deadly inhabitants of its islands nor the turbulence of its waters; it’s the rumbling of Kara’s stomach. Windbound’s hunger meter constantly nags at you to drop anchor at every landmass you see in order to search for food, a search that can frequently prove futile when the procedurally generated island you manage to land at has no procedurally generated flora or fauna to eat. Worse still, any food you carry with you is often likely to spoil before you need to eat it. Indeed, starvation proved to be the direct cause of the majority of my deaths early in Windbound as I got to grips with its systems. Still, I was otherwise content to play on the Survivalist setting - that is, until midway through the fourth chapter when, with a full bar of health and a recently topped-up hunger meter, I was suddenly killed by a single hit from a shark-like beast that charged my boat in the middle of the ocean; quite literally out of the blue. The next thing I knew I was waking up on the shore at the beginning of the first chapter, some six or seven hours of progress washed away like a sand castle in a rising tide. This abrupt and seemingly unavoidable demise left a salty taste in my mouth that had nothing to do with swallowing too much seawater, and needless to say after that I switched the difficulty to ‘Storyteller’ and kept it there for the remainder of my Windbound playthrough.

Whatever Floats Your Boat

Storyteller mode certainly makes progress easier since enemies are weaker, and if you die you can restart with your full inventory intact at the beginning of your current chapter rather than all the way back at the start. But Windbound’s plot is so scarce, and its objectives so repetitive, that once you’ve stripped away the more challenging survival mechanics and roguelike structure you really aren’t left with a particularly engrossing adventure. Each of the five chapters of Windbound feature three randomly placed but structurally indistinct tower beacons that must be found and activated before you can pass through an exit portal. The story, or what evidence there is of one, is mostly told either through cryptic text that occasionally appears onscreen or via a static mural that is gradually revealed upon the completion of each chapter. That’s it. In story terms there’s no reason to really explore Windbound’s waters since, at least from my time with it, there appears to be no characters to meet or unique structures to uncover. There’s just not enough mystery to lure me into clearing the fog off each of its maps, since invariably the most exciting discoveries to make are merely shrines to increase the limits of your health and stamina bars. Windbound hints at an ocean of possibilities at its outset, but ultimately delivers an adventure with all the depth and excitement of a wading pool. [poilib element="quoteBox" parameters="excerpt=Windbound%20hints%20at%20an%20ocean%20of%20possibilities%20at%20its%20outset%2C%20but%20ultimately%20delivers%20an%20adventure%20with%20all%20the%20depth%20and%20excitement%20of%20a%20wading%20pool."]In fact, the biggest mystery that confounded me in Windbound was trying to figure out why the developers didn’t include a minimap. I’m totally in favour of eliminating minimaps to make exploration in open-world games more immersive - most recently exemplified by Ghost of Tsushiba - but I honestly feel like that’s a far more practical design choice when you have landmarks to navigate by. In the case of Windbound, the lack of a minimap or even a simple compass meant I was constantly pausing to check the in-menu map as I sailed across huge swathes of empty ocean with nothing on the horizon to orient myself with, which made already lengthy journeys even more sluggish.

Today Takara Tomy released a new gameplay trailer of Zoids Wild Infinity Blast, alongside the release date for the Japanese market.

Nippon Dakkan Project: What We Know So Far On the New (Sakura Taisen) RPG By DelightWorks

Nihon Dakkan Project RPG DelightWorks Sakura Wars Shina Sakura feature

DelightWorks announced on August 27 a new iOS, Android game, which is currently only code named as project Nippon, Dakkan (Reclaim Japan). A short teaser was published, and is included further below. It’s not as obvious as with Project Black, but seeing what DelightWorks published so far, it’s likely that Nippon Dakkan is related to Sega’s Sakura Wars / Sakura Taisen franchise. For now, on its official site, the game’s actual name is hidden. It’ll launch in Fall 2020.

In the announcement tweet, DelightWork described the (possible Sakura Wars) RPG as a “Coming-of-age story about “incomplete” maidens, who never give up on their dreams and each have something they wish to reclaim. They fight to reclaim *** Japan.” The *** part being hidden.

The game will be fully revealed by DelightWorks on September 2. This is also when Sega will fully reveal Project Black with a livestream.

Nippon, Dakkan Teaser Trailer Reveal

Following the announcement, DelightWorks has these past few days revealed on Twitter short gameplay videos featuring female main characters appearing in the game. Note that the characters’ profiles on the official site are purposefully incomplete, and will stay so until the September 2 reveal. So we’ll translate the full profiles when we get them, in another article. We only included the characters’ names and their seiyuu below, along with the gameplay sequences:

Shino Sakura, voiced by Moeka Kishimoto:

Asebi Mikohama, voiced by Yuuko Natsuyoshi:

Fuuka Aoshima, voiced by Ayu Matsuura:

More characters were teased with silhouettes, we’ll get to them when the game is fully revealed. Their names and seiyuu are listed too: Mana Juujigai (voiced by Saki Minami), Tsutsuji Takasaki (Ai Yamaguchi), Benishi Hijikata (Reina Ueda), and Mitsuha Mogami (Karin Takahashi).

Judging from the currently purposefully incomplete story summary, Nippon Dakkan project is taking place in the 2000s, in the future of a certain world, most probably the Sakura Taisen world. While its hidden, we can also see the game uses a specific calendar, like Sakura Taisen. Moreover, Sega already teased more Sakura Wars to come. We’ll know for sure on September 2.

Lastly, DelightWorks announced Hololive VTuber Fubuki Shirakami will be the official ambassador of the project and will hold a live on her channel on September 2 at 1930 JST. Fubuki will be commenting on the reveal, meaning it’ll happen before that time.

Fubuki Shirakami is one of the most popular VTubers so this is definitely a move by DelightWorks (and maybe Sega) to make this (maybe new Sakura Wars) game popular with younger generations. DelightWorks has a reputation by itself too as the developer of FGO.

We’ll be covering the Nippon Dakkan reveal, the Fubuki Shirakami stream, and the Project Black stream, as I’ll try my best to activate Otoshigami Mode, so be sure to check DualShockers on September 2.

Have you played… Unavowed?

Unavowed stand-offWadjet Eye Games have been around for absolutely yonks. First rising to prominence with the Blackwell series, in which you and your ghost pal help lost souls transition to the afterlife, the studio have dabbled in a host of intriguing settings and locations for their puzzle games. Unavowed is the culmination of all the years spent perfecting the craft. The game opens in media res with an exorcism. You’ve apparently been possessed by a demon who needs to be cast out from within you. It’s here that you can choose your character’s background – a bartender, actor, or cop. I’ve played the first two (I won’t be choosing cop any time soon) and without spoiling too much, there are more than enough unique interactions and story lines based on your character’s past to warrant multiple playthroughs even after you’ve encountered all the twists and turns of the main story. What wonderful twists and turns they are though. Upon joining the squad of your newfound, demon-free buddies, you’ll start getting to know them and their goals with every mission. They’re all brilliantly voice-acted and expertly written as the justice-seeking magical outcasts they are, with unique personalities that’ll mean you’ll develop favourites in your squad.

This manifests in your missions, where you have to choose which team members you take along – do you want the guy who can speak to ghosts, the action hero half-Jinn with superhuman physical ability, the fire mage who can literally burn stuff, or Woman With Gun? They’re all useful in their own ways, and uncover new and fun interactions depending on the path you take, with numerous ways to complete each mission. The way the story develops, as you find out more about the intricate urban fantasy crafted by lead writer Dave Gilbert, makes it so worth a shot at playing. Not only that, but it modernises and streamlines all the best aspects of Lucasarts and Sierra’s point-and-click design philosophies from the past. Also, some of the ways you can die are brilliant. Right at the beginning, a void creature thingy tries to attack your party and if you try to kill it by hitting it with a pipe, it just casually eats your entire face off with absolutely no fanfare.Unavowed oozes polish and personality, and it’s basically guaranteed I’ll be checking out whatever Wadjet Eye Games come out with next.

Mary Skelter Finale for PS4 & Nintendo Switch Delayed For The Second Time

Today Compile Heart announced a delay for the Japanese release of upcoming dungeon-crawling JRPG Mary Skelter Finale.

The former release date was on October 8, 2020, while now the game is scheduled to hit the shelves a month later, on November 5. Luckily, it’s not a giant delay.

The reason for the shift in release date hasn’t been detailed beyond “various circumstances.”

This is the second time Mary Skelter Finale is delayed. It was originally planned for a launch in Japan on August 27, but Compile Heart delayed it back in June.

At the moment, no western release has been announced, so we’ll have to wait and see whether Idea Factory international will announce it down the line. We don’t know whether this delay has affected probable plans for North America and Europe.

It’d also be interesting to see whether it’d lose the PS4 version in the west, as it happened with its predecessor.

For now, you can take a look at the latest video, an older traileranother featuring the opening cutscene, and some gameplay from a while ago.

Review: Madden NFL 21 - Football Brings All the Boys to the Yard

Fumble.

Madden NFL 21 finds itself in a particularly peculiar position this year. The football simulation’s launching less than three months prior to the PlayStation 5, and while there will be a free upgrade to the next-gen console, it really shows. Despite bundling in a potential series cornerstone in the Yard, this is a relatively low-effort attempt that barely builds upon its predecessor.

It’s a flashy instalment, though, of that there’s no doubt. Buoyed by the busyness of its box art, the release’s user interface is filled with X’s and O’s and bright neon colours – it’s as if the designers wanted to capture what it would look like if team training took place at an electropop festival. Such unexpected combinations extend to the new Yard mode, where you can create your own player and combine all sorts of uniform ensembles to show off in front of your pals.

The Last of Us Part II Animator Explains How the Game’s Realistic Facial Expressions Came to Be

Recent Naughty Dog games haven’t just been praised for their story; they’ve also been lauded for their photorealistic graphics, from the stunning vistas to the character models themselves. The Last of Us Part II is the latest project from Naughty Dog, and it boasts some of the most realistic facial animations we’ve ever seen in video games.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Ellie’s fixation on a painting in a synagogue is used as the starting example of how incredible the animation is. As the camera angles towards the painting, Ellie has an expression that almost suggests that she’s studying the painting as well, as if she’s contemplating the meaning behind it.

The trick, apparently, lies in player input and a whole array of emotions and expressions that the animators have programmed for the characters.

According to Keith Paciello, the studio animator for The Last of Us Part II:

‘“In that instance,” he explains during our video call after I describe the scene to him, “you as a player are aiming with the controller for Ellie to look at the painting, which is triggering a ‘look at target’ placed by a designer. On top of that, I animated small eye darts (saccades) within the character’s facial idles to try and indicate an overall thought process. So animated eye saccades sitting on top of the eye-aim, work together to create what looks like focus and thought process.”

In simplest terms, it picks a facial expression from a range of nearly 20 different emotional states for any of the 25 key characters that are on-screen. That covers leads, co-op partners, enemies, even Infected to an extent.

Facial animation working in unison with eye movements, body language, breathing… all interlinked and triggered by script beats, dialogue encounters or ambient moments, like Ellie seemingly being absorbed by a painting. The illusion of emotion is constructed with mathematical precision. “It brings a depth to the characters that we’ve never seen before,” says Paciello.’

Paciello also draws attention to the final confrontation of the game, and explains that in order to really bring out the emotion of that climactic moment, a character’s facial expression would subtly change from fierce to exhausted right after throwing out a punch to show how worn out they were. All subtle details, but throughout the course of the game, they add up to lend an emotional gravitas to The Last of Us Part II.

Eiyuden Chronicle Has Become the Third Best-Selling Video Game Kickstarter

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the spiritual successor to Suikoden, has become the third best-selling Kickstarter video game with a final total of over $4.5 million raised. Eiyuden Chronicle trails only behind Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night's $5.5 million and Shenmue 3's $6.3 million as the best-selling video game Kickstarter, flying past its original goal of $500,000. Key members of the development team responsible for the cult classic RPG series Suikoden will be working on Eiyuden Chronicle, and it will take the form of a JRPG with a 2.5D visual style. Furthermore, it will have 100 heroes to recruit, a 'fortress building system,' and a turn-based battle system with parties of six characters. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/24/eiyuden-chronicle-hundred-heroes-gameplay-teaser"] The story of Eiyuden Chronicle will be written by Suikoden series creator and Suikoden 1 and 2 writer Yoshitaka Murayama, and other ex-Suikoden team members will handle the character design, system design, and direction. Since this Kickstarter surpassed its goal in a major way, many of the stretch goals were met, including PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch versions, and a companion game called A Quiet Place that was the $4.5 million goal. For those who aren't familiar with the Suikoden series, which began in 1995 on the original PlayStation, be sure to read our take on why Suikoden 2 is the best game you've never played. The making of Turbo Esprit, the Spectrum game set in Romford that predated GTA

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto has become such a behemoth it seems strange the series started out life as an unexpected smash. Driving around the cities in that first top-down crime caper was thrilling and liberating; there was no being forced down dingy first-person corridors here, and you could gleefully ignore the game's missions and enjoy exploring/causing mayhem in the sprawling urban environment. GTA was often cited as refreshingly original in the games press of the time - yet those of us who had been playing on our ZX Spectrums eleven years earlier thought it all played a little familiar to a multi-city adventure by the name of Turbo Esprit.

But the miracle of Turbo Esprit is not just its innovative gameplay, but the way it presents a real and suitably grim 80s urban landscape for the player to drive around, all within a mere 48k of memory. Traffic lights operate with annoying frequency, pedestrians stroll around, seemingly oblivious to the speeding cars that charge down the narrow streets and stark, angular buildings enshroud every screen. The player, assuming control of the eponymous sports car, can either take on the nefarious drug dealers or buzz around the city, obeying - or disobeying - the Highway Code to their heart's content. Sound familiar?

The freedom to make this choice was rarely seen in 1986. "I wanted a game where you could drive around a city in real time, with the fantasy of James Bond-like machine guns to blow away the bad guys," says Robert White, owner and founder of Turbo Esprit's publisher, Durell Software. "So I took the parallelepiped concept from BDS to make skyscrapers in a way that a whole city block could rapidly be drawn from a surprisingly compact database." With his experience as a CAD specialist for the Oxford Regional Health Authority, which used an integrated computer modelling system (the aforementioned BDS) to design its hospitals, White fostered the concept of an urban landscape, with the player free to move around within its confines.
