In a post from Gamesindustry.biz, games rental service GameFly has been acquired by Alliance Entertainment.
“We’re intensely focused on listening to what our customers are telling us, and then finding ways to give them what they are asking for,” said Jeff Walker, CEO of Alliance Entertainment. “Alliance is the largest distributor of physical media in the US, and we’re using our expertise with GameFly’s nearly 20 years of experience in subscription game rentals to imagine new offerings that previously were not doable.”
Despite the acquisition, GameFly will continue to run independently. In addition, Walker will also serve as the CEO and co-owner of GameFly on top of those roles at Alliance. When asked about any potential layoffs following the acquisition, a GameFly spokesperson told Gamesindustry.biz that “there were a handful of positions eliminated after the close, but no more are planned.”
Alliance Entertainment, which claims it’s the largest wholesale distributor of movies and music in the US, says they plan on expanding the catalog of games GameFly offers. Additionally, they’ll expand the number of collectibles, movies, accessories, hardware, and games for sale on the site.
“Over the coming months, we’re going to be making some big announcements about fresh changes to our subscriptions that we think will make console gamers very happy,” said Tim Hinsley, the president of GameFly in a report from Engadget.
GameFly was founded in 2002 as a company that mails game rentals to your door. In 2009, they acquired Shacknews but the site was later purchased by Gamerhub in 2014. The acquisition of GameFly comes as companies like Redbox stopped offering game rentals in 2018. Also in 2018, EA made an investment in cloud gaming by acquiring the technology behind GameFly’s services.
For those interested in signing up for GameFly, you can get a 30-day free trial and then pay as low as $5 a month. As more news comes out about GameFly’s future plans, we’ll be sure to let you know.
