During its Tokyo Game Show 2020 Presentation, Koei Tecmo revealed Shin Sangokumusou 8 Empires or Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires.
The game is coming for PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC via Steam in 2021.
This is among the games intended to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary that were teased by producer Akihiro Suzuki back in August.
You can check out the trailer revealed during the show below.
This game is quite different from its predecessor as it won’t focus on the open world. It will instead focus on siege battles with battlefield focused on the zone around each fortress. You can win the siege by a variety of means.
Empires also places the accent on “political strategy” and on the interactions between warlords. On top of that, there will be an “Edit feature” that will let you create your own warlord that will be your alter ego on the battlefield.
The original Dynasty Warriors 9 was released all the way at the beginning of 2018 and it’s currently available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, you can read our review.
Incidentally, if you’re wondering about the discrepancy in the numbers between the Japanese and English titles, the game named “Dynasty Warriors” in the west (“Sangokumusou” in Japan) actually isn’t really part of the franchise.
The first true Dynasty Warriors game was “Shin Sangokumusou” in 2020. Since there already was a Dynasty Warriors in the west, it was simply called Dynasty Warriors 2.
That’s why the latest game of the franchise is named “Dynasty Warriors 9 in the west and Shin Sangokumusou 8 in Japan.
