Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 will include a classic trick with a new name in honor of the trick's original creator. Skateboarders and fans of the THPS series are likely well aware of what a mute air or mute grab is, but many might not know the history of this trick's name. Tony Hawk took to Instagram to announce that, in the upcoming THPS 1+2 remaster, the trick will have a new name. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tony-hawks-pro-skate-1-and-2-new-skaters-screenshots&captions=true"] "For nearly 40 years, we've shamelessly referred to this trick as the 'mute' air/grab," Hawk said on his Instagram today. "Here is the backstory: around 1981, a deaf skater and Colton skatepark local named Chris Weddle was a prominent amateur on the competition circuit. The 'Indy' air had just been created and named so somebody proposed that grabbing with the front hand should be known as the 'Tracker' air." Hawk explained that because Weddle was the first to do the trick, the trick should be named after him. Weddle was often referred to as the "quiet, mute guy," Hawk said, and so the mute air was made. Hawk admitted that he and other skaters went along with the name in naivety, not realizing that Weddle might not have agreed with the name. "In recent years, a few people have reached out to Chris (who still skates) about this trick and the name it was given," Hawk said. "He has been very gracious in his response but it is obvious that a different name would have honored his legacy, as he is hearing impaired but not lacking speech. I asked him last year as I was diving into trick origins and he said he would have rather named it the 'deaf' or 'Weddle' grab if given the choice." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/12/tony-hawk-pro-skater-12-remake-warehouse-demo-gameplay"] Hawk said the Weddle's exact words were "I am deaf, not mute." When players boot up THPS 1+2, they'll find that the trick is now called the Weddle Grab. "It's going to be challenging to break the habit of saying the old name but I think Chris deserves the recognition." You can perform the Weddle Grab yourself in THPS 1 + 2 this Friday when the Warehouse Demo goes live on Aug. 14. Be sure to check out our THPS 1 + 2 remaster Warehosue Demo impressions while waiting for the demo to go live.
